Social Services Waikato

SOCIAL SERVICES WAIKATO  was established in March 2001, as an independent charitable trust.  They aim to work alongside community-based social service groups, supporting, strengthening and advocating around issues affecting people and organizations in the sector.

They view 'social services' as caring work in health and welfare, which contributes to the wellbeing of people and communities and their work supports community based, not-for-profit organizations. 

The area for Social Services Waikato encompasses the greater Waikato, the towns and people served by the Councils of Hamilton City, Hauraki, Matamata-Piako, Otorohanga, Ruapehu, South Waikato, Thames Coromandel, Waikato, Waipa, Waitomo.  It is largely the lands and people of the Tainui waka.

Sport Waikato

They aim to make a positive contribution to the community through  active living philosophy, giving everyone the opportunity to make the most out of life. Upright and Active is a programme aimed at decreasing the incidence of falls in older adults by improving strength and balance through some simple exercises.

Stroke Foundation 

STROKE FOUNDATION WAIKATO aims 'to reduce the incidence of stroke and gain and provide the greatest benefits for the stroke affected community to improve their quality of life.'

Since it began in 1980, the Stroke Foundation has created a network of over 40 Field Officers and 70 Stroke Clubs throughout New Zealand

Waikato Asthma and Respiratory Society

WAIKATO ASTHMA & RESPIRATORY SOCIETY provides extra support, information and education for people with asthma and other related breathing problems and their families, and advocate on their behalf.  It offers one to one consultation, advice for smoking cessation and willing speakers for groups.

Waikato District Health Board (Waikato DHB)

WAIKATO DISTRICT HEALTH BOARD  is one of New Zealand's most progressive publicly-funded health organisations. It's responsible for funding and providing services to achieve good health and independence for the 320,000 people living in the Waikato district of the central North Island of New Zealand.

Older Persons and Rehabilitation Service (OPRS) - Single Point of Entry (SPE)
From 1 August, 2005 the single point of entry for all referrals to OPRS for those aged 65 years and over will be via:

The SPE is for ALL referrals to OPRS from throughout the Waikato DHB region, ie. Waikato, King Country, Thames/Coromandel and Hauraki.  A more responsive and co-ordinated service is expected to result from this change and feedback on this will be sought as the project progresses.  The referral form will be trialled for three months and then reviewed.  During this period only a limited number will be printed. Further information about availability of forms, and the SPE, is available from the contact points listed above.

(Note: adults/children without an age-related need will continue to use the existing process, ie. referral to Disability Support Link (DSL) for needs assessment and service co-ordination.)

Waikato Good Companions Social Club INC

WAIKATO GOOD COMPANIONS SOCIAL CLUB INC provides friendship and companionship for both people on their own and married couples.  Club membership available.  There are organized trips, outings and regular dances at affordable prices.  They have a dance every fourth Saturday night at the Aberdeen Centre, Aberdeen Drive.

Waikato Health and Disability Advocacy Trust

WAIKATO HEALTH & DISABILITY ADVOCACY TRUST are independent advocates that assist consumers to make sure that their rights are respected. This service is free to everyone. Advocacy services operate independently of government agencies, the Commissioner and providers and funders of health and disability services. A primary goal of advocates is to assist consumers to resolve complaints about the quality of a health or disability service directly with the service provider.

Waikato Irish Club (Inc)

The WAIKATO IRISH CLUB INC  is centred on Hamilton, the major city in the Waikato region of NZ's North Island. Activities are organised for young as well as older members. It facilitates the active promotion of Irish culture for younger members and encourages participation in Ceilidhs, music making, Irish national dancing, Rose of Tralee events and other Irish and Celtic cultural initiatives.

Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ)

WORK & INCOME NEW ZEALAND is a service of the Ministry of Social Development.

Work and Income has 11 regional offices and service centres nationwide. The National Office is in Wellington.

Work and Income helps job seekers and pays income support on behalf of the Government. This includes superannuation payments to retired people along with the administration of war pensions and residential care and support subsidies.

Work and Income also administers the Community Services Card, International Services, and the Enterprising Communities grants programme.
