Age Concern Hamilton

Age Concern Hamilton - Serving the needs of older people

Age Concern Hamilton provide direct services, information and referral service which empower older people to make their owne choices and decisions. All services are free and confidential.  We provide regular learning opportunities for older people with workshops, seminars and education programmes.
These include Safe with Age driver awareness, weekly education seminars on a range of topics, Through Other Eyes workshops exploring the challenges which may come with age, Health Promotion training with health professionals and other agencies. Our other services include: Accredited Visiting, Shopping Service,  Elder Abuse & Neglect Prevention, Fieldworker Service, Active Age on Air community radio programme and a quarterly newsletter.

Arthritis Foundation Waikato Division

Arthritis New Zealand's national office is based in Wellington but delivery of services is primarily through our four regions, 22 service centres and local branches and support groups around the country.  

ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION WAIKATO DIVISION website details

 Each service centre provides a range of services which include:

  • Arthritis Educators who provide personal support, education, advice and liason with other providers
  • Support groups - regular meetings & social events in many locations or for specialised needs eg lupus support, craft groups etc...
  • Exercise and hydrotherapy classes.
  • Educational resources and forums.
  • Self management for chronic conditions. Six week courses which assist people manage their condition more successfully.
  • A range of resources, aids and information.
  • Mobility transport vouchers.
  • Some services are available only to members, but our arthritis educator service and information leaflets are freely available.

Arthritis NZ, Waikato Service Centre

ARTHRITIS NZ, WAIKATO SERVICE CENTRE is a non profit organisation, promoting awareness & self management for people who have been diagnosed with Arthritis.  We are able to accomplish this by running regular free clinics & seminars.  Our educator works with patients, GP's, assists patients in remainnig as independent as possible.  Different pain management, exercise, links in the community etc are discussed where appropriate

ASTHMA & RESPIRATORY SOCIETY provides extra support, information & education for people with asthma & other related breathing problems & their families & advocate on their behalf.  We also offer one to one consultation, advice for smoking cessation & are willing to speak to groups

Celebrating Age Centre

CELEBRATING AGE CENTRE  is a facility provided by the Hamilton City Councils Community Development team that provides a focal point for Hamilton’s older community.

There are four organisations based at the centre; Age Concern, Grey Power, Senior Citizens Association and Senior net.

The Celebration cafe is open Monday - Friday 9am - 2 pm for delicious morning teas and lunches. 

The centre also hosts a variety of activities, organisations and groups for senior citizens at the centre throughout the week.

Council of Elders for Hamilton City

COUNCIL OF ELDERS FOR HAMILTON CITY  was established in 1993 by Mayor Margaret Evans as an advisory body/kaumatua to the Mayor and Councillors.  All Hamilton citizens over the age of 60 years are eligible to stand for the Council of Elders. 

 The official role of the Council of Elders is to: 

  • examine matters affecting all residents of the City of Hamilton and,
  • to be a voice for the people of the City of Hamilton

Diabetes New Zealand

DIABETES NEW ZEALAND  is a nationwide, non-governmental, non-profit organisation, which is an Incorporated Society. Established in February 1962, the aim of the organisation is to support its 14,000 members, 41 diabetes societies throughout New Zealand, and health professionals involved with diabetes.

 Diabetes New Zealand: 

  • Acts as the national advocate for people affected by diabetes
  • Encourages local support for people with diabetes
  • Raises the level of awareness of diabetes
  • Educates and informs about diabetes, its treatment and prevention
  • Empowers people with diabetes to choose healthy lifestyles

DISABILITY SUPPORT LINK is a community-based organisation providing need assessment and service co-ordination for people of all ages who have a disability.  An outcome of this service may be access to Ministry of Health funded services such as Home Help, Personal Care, Carer Support, day programme.

Fifties Forward (Swimming Club)

FIFTIES FORWARD (SWIMMING CLUB) are a swimming club who meet 3 times a week at Waterworld, Garnett Avenue and do exercises in the pool to music and we also have a social club and meet for a cup of tea afterwards.  $4 a lesson or $30 for 10 swims.

Grey Power

GREY POWER's overall aims and objectives can be viewed on their website but include advancing, supporting and protecting the welfare and well being of older people. 

Greypower has a number of branches through New Zealand that hold monthly seminars and talks, and distributes publications such as their magazine “Lifestyle”, and local newsletters.
