Some nasty Budget surprises have emerged, including cuts affecting teachers and elderly rest home residents. As Parliament headed into urgency yesterday to start pushing through a hefty hike in tobacco taxes, new legislation also emerged changing the asset threshold for deciding a person's eligibility for aged rest home care, just weeks before the next rise was due to take effect. Instead of raising the threshold by $10,000 a year each July 1, the threshold will now rise in line with inflation.

Senior Citizens Minister Jo Goodhew today announced a new goal to double the number of businesses in the SuperGold scheme to 3,000 by the end of 2014.  "We have seen good progress with 100 new businesses joining the scheme in the last few months and I'm ambitious to see it expand further," said Mrs Goodhew.

Media Release: Age Concern New Zealand, 15 May, 2012   

Age Concern New Zealand says new figures show the significant portion of society older people make up. The figures, released yesterday by Statistics New Zealand show those over 80 are the fastest growing age-group with the age group growing at about four times the rate of 20 years ago. There are presently more than 160,000 New Zealanders aged over 80 but Statistics New Zealand estimates this number could reach half a million by 2050.

Scam warning for elderly over letters

Bay of Plenty Times 1/5/13

An advocacy group for the elderly is warning pensioners of a potential scam involving personalised letters. The warning comes after a Tauranga woman was sent a personalised letter from Spain. The letter had authentic-looking markings from an overseas postal service. It claimed the woman, who only wanted to be identified as Betty, had won more than $500,000.

Aged Care Funding to Increase

The Government will put $70m over four years into aged care and dementia services.

Health Minister Tony Ryall said the funding, to be included in the Budget on May 16, would help older New Zealanders to be healthier and independent.
