Age Concern Staff, 26 March 2012

In the lead up to the great Pumpkin Carnival (being held this weekend Sunday 1 April at Hamilton Gardens), a promotional event in the form of a Pumpkin Throw/Bowl was held at Garden Place today. The stand off was between Team Hamilton City Council vs Team Sue Maroney MP. Team HCC was lead by councillor Dave Mc Pherson. Team Maroney was made up of Sue (MP), Gail Gilbert (Age Concern) and Sue (Plunket).  The Plunket staff came out in force to cheer their team member while a smaller contingent came from Age Concern.

Dominion Post, March 21, 2012 

At Upper Hutt's Home of Compassion yesterday, Sister Felix, 97, was mortified that one-time fellow soup kitchen worker Eddie Mollier had nominated her for a New Zealand Local Hero medal. "I'd like to wring his neck," she said with a chuckle, eyes twinkling. "He thought the sun and the stars shone out of me – I was his pin-up girl."

Media Release: Age Concern New Zealand, March 19, 2012

Age Concern New Zealand is delighted a new law which comes into effect today will provide greater legal protection for older people. The Crimes Amendment Act (No 3) 2011 was passed last year to give agencies greater ability to “hold individuals to account for harming the most vulnerable in our community.”

AC Staff 19 March 2012

On Monday 19th March our rejuvenated seniors event (previously Warm-up, Walk & Wade) in conjunction with Sport Waikato and the Hamilton City Council was run. It involved a warm up at the Celebrating Age Centre, a bus trip to Waterworld, a fun session in the new hydrotherapy pool and return to the centre for a 'brown bag lunch'.

Two Give Way rules are changing and they come into effect at 5am on Sunday 25 March 2012.  To learn more about the rules see the NZTA sites listed below or come along to our Friday morning seminar on the 23 March when staff from  Age Concern Tauranga will go through the new rules and also tips for safer driving for seniors.  This includes cars, cycling, walkers and mobility scooters.

Scam warning for elderly over letters

Bay of Plenty Times 1/5/13

An advocacy group for the elderly is warning pensioners of a potential scam involving personalised letters. The warning comes after a Tauranga woman was sent a personalised letter from Spain. The letter had authentic-looking markings from an overseas postal service. It claimed the woman, who only wanted to be identified as Betty, had won more than $500,000.

Aged Care Funding to Increase

The Government will put $70m over four years into aged care and dementia services.

Health Minister Tony Ryall said the funding, to be included in the Budget on May 16, would help older New Zealanders to be healthier and independent.
